Example Two:This video is about a teacher who starts off asking his students a multiple choice question. The students would use their prior knowledge to answer the question. He keeps track of the amount of people who answered correctly and if a lot of people don't know the answer, he will go back and review. This teacher uses partners as a way for the children to dices their answers. This way of activating prior knowledge includes peer instruction and includes the whole class to work together.

Schema Theory: Students build upon schemata in regards to the world, every day events, areas of expertise, and different types of text while building on this knowledge when introduced to new concepts (Literacy in Context (LinC), 2011).
Vygotsky's theory of hands on learning. The teacher is asking the students what they remember or already know. (Cherry, 2015) |
Writing Standard:
W.6.8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources. This relates to the strategy because the student could look up new information and use that with their prior knowledge or previous readings and relate that to what they learned from the sources they looked up. Students would be able to demonstrate their understanding by applying new information with prior knowledge. |
